Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: Katie Salidas

Author Bio:

The youngest of four children, Katie has always had a desire to entertain. Since, early childhood, she's dreamed fantastical characters and scribbled them into pages of various journals and notebooks. Taking an interest in vampires, she devoured every book, featuring those blood sucking creatures, in any genre she could find.

It was only natural that a love of reading vampire stories, turned into a love to write them.

Katie is also a Las Vegas native, having grown up in the famed City of Sin. She loves to feature it as a recurring setting for many of her stories.

Hunters & Prey:

Becoming a vampire saved Alyssa from death, but the price was high: the loss of everything and everyone attached to her mortal life. She’s still learning to cope when a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum’s most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the friend she’s missed more than anything.

Alyssa breaks vampire law by revealing her new, true self to her old friend, a fact which causes strong division in the group that should support her most: her clan.
Worse yet, her revelation entangles Fallon in the struggle between vampires and hunters and The Acta Sanctorum is ready to attack again, with a new army of hybrid creations: the Frenzy Soldiers.

If Alyssa hopes to survive and keep her mortal friend safe, she’ll have to be willing to make a deal with the enemy, and regain her clan’s support. It will take everyone working together in a precarious truce to fight against the Acta Sanctorum’s new threat.

Interview for Domestic Violence project
By Author Tiffanie Minnis

I'm conducting interviews for my next book; Less Violence, More Love. I will send a email with 5 questions to those that are willing to participate. If you would like to remain anonymous, you will. If you will like to be quoted, you will. I'm looking to interview 50 women and/or men for this project. This is my way of showing the world the effects of abuse and what one goes through when involved in abusive relationships and how it's possible to escape and survive before it's too late. Please send an email to tminnis1981@gmail.com, inbox me on Facebook or DM me on twitter if you are interested or if you know someone that is.

Thank you,

Kick Starter Project

I launched my kickstarter project last night for my novel, DIVA and for my non-profit organization for Domestic Violence Awareness. I'm looking to raise $1,000 which will cover the re-launch of my novel and start up costs for my non-profit organization.

Novel re-launch will include; new high definition book cover and a music soundtrack recorded in a music studio. I would like to do anywhere from 3-5 songs which will be written and recorded by me. The songs will be in the hip hop genre (clean versions only) and will be related to domestic violence.

Non-profit organization; Domestic Violence Movement; Less Violence,More Love, which caters to both men and women that are or have been in abusive relationships. The organization will be based on prevention and education program, community outreach, housing, and children's program. The funding balance will go towards start up cost.

Rewards;

For anyone that makes a $20 pledge or more, they will receive an autographed copy of my novel, ~D.I.V.A.~ DOMESTICALLY INVOLVED IN VIOLENT AFFAIRS, along with a DIVA swag bag filled with goodies. Your name will also be listed at the end of the re-launched novel as a sponsor.

Even if you pledge as little as $1, I'm very grateful for your contribution. Funding is all or nothing, meaning if I don't reach my goal of $1000 by the end of 90 days, you will not be charged for your pledged amount and you will only be charged at the end of the 90 days IF my goal has been reached. You can follow me until the very end of all that I'm working to do. I will be held liable if I don't fulfill any agreements and you may contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

So with that being said, please tell your friends and spread the word. Thank you in advance for your support.

Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: Joseph J. Sivak MD

I first started writing When Can I Go Home? back in 1989 when I was in my last year of medical school. That was about a year after my mother died from Alzheimer's disease. The book is a memoir about my mother's futile struggle with the disease. After she passed away I had a tremendous need and sometimes furious drive to record the journey in a timeless and permanent way. As a teenager, I had been my mother's primary caregiver for a few years , as the disease progressively robbed her of her cognitive abilities, personality and her very essence. At the time writing about it was very cathartic.

The disease process is profoundly isolating for families and I wanted to scream out and tell the world. That element is there in so many Alzheimer's memoirs. Unfortunately the issue of isolation has not improved in our society and much as we like to pretend it has in the last thirty years since my mother was diagnosed. At that time most people had not heard of Alzheimer's disease and of course now it is a household term, but as a society we are still ignorant and terrified about it till it affects our own family. The isolation is still there.

The book is a bit unusual or even paradoxical from an Alzheimer's memoir point of view in that It presents a dual perspective. First is a family caregiver specifically a teenager son, which is a bit unusual and at times even bizarre, since that is not the prototypical demographic of a caregiver. The other perspective is a clinical one from a physician. I have treated thousands of patients and their families affected by many psychiatric and neurological problems including many Alzheimer's victims. The clinical information is broken down and translated for the reader.

So you essentially have these two very different points of view sort of flip-flopping but sort of coming into what I hope is a harmonious symmetry. The third aspect of the book is an underlying and ongoing commentary on all the relevant sociological and psychological issues this book interfaces with. Such issues as the state of health care delivery, being a doctor, and the aging population are addressed and sometimes not in a very convenient way for those that need to hold onto pretense and prejudice for security. For example as a society we really don't treat the aging population with the honor and dignity they deserve. We are pretty much obsessed with youth and appearance. We also have a lot of bias toward the medical profession if not at times completely vilifying the field. So in that sense speaking candidly about things albeit my opinion yet based on experience may open the readers eyes, on some issue conversely it may propel some to try to look the other way even more. It's not always politically correct, but it is a memoir and it is honest. It is sort of visceral, some people will cry some will laugh some will get more angry, it makes you feel first, then think.

The manuscript was hard to finish, it lay dormant for some fifteen years, I never had an ending. Even after the death of an Alzheimer's victim, there is never an ending for the five million families affected by the disease. something hit me, after all these years. We are all universally humanly connected by this disease process, and I had the clarity to finish this book.

I love writing, but most of my energy and creativity is spent in my day job. I am currently working on a novel about psychiatric residency. Fiction is obviously a much different prospect than a memoir but it taps a different part of your brain and soul to create something like this compared to a memoir.

Book Info:

The true life account of a young man living with the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a parent. The disease was diagnosed in his mother when the author was seventeen years old in 1979, long before Alzheimer's disease was a household term.

The book candidly traces with graphic detailed description and dialogue the course of the fatal illness. The emotional issues of such pivotal events as the loss of autonomy of driving a car and entry into a nursing home are experienced through the eyes of a young son. From a concurrent viewpoint Alzheimer's is explained with the wisdom of a 21st century physician who has personally experienced the emotional anguish, and thus the fact-based journey is a truly unique dual-perspective Alzheimer's memoir. The story juxtaposes the active uphill battle to become a doctor set against the backdrop of the passive helpless struggle of losing a parent to the disease

The narrative provides explicit commentary on the modern plight of the physician and the global connection family members of an Alzheimer's victim painstakingly share. The unusual, seldom before elicited insights of the dual-perspective vigorously address universal issues such as coping, hope, futility, humiliation and societal bias toward the disease throughout the text.

Is Writers Movement Really Making the Right Moves for Thier Writers/Members?

I received an email from a WM member asking what exactly does WM do for our members besides chats. Because of this great question, I just want to bring up a few things.

Yes, WM was created to support fellow members/writers by blogging about their works, promoting them on twitter, facebook and networkedblogs, interviews, support through the critique group, purchasing works of fellow members and many other things. Ben and I have blogged about the importance of mutual support because you can't have a support system if no one is doing their parts of being supportive and reaching out to help in any way they can. WM is of course a free online community where everyone can join so it isn't fair for Ben and I to do all the work to make sure everyone gets exposure and support but no one else is giving back in any way. True, Ben and I have teamed up to promote our new releases because both of our releases were due in the same month and we were the only two that showed fire and passion for what WM had to offer. We never shunned anyone intentionally but we figured that if any one wanted to be a part of anything WM laid out on the table, we made it very open and easy for others to reach out to us. So, with that being said, WM will be back in full effect beginning next week! If any one is on board feel free to stay on board and be apart of the movement BUT we will only support those that gives support back... even a simple RT on twitter or repost on FaceBook is good enough. But like I said many times before; " Mutual Support Leads To Major Accomplishments"

Title: Dream Bigger: Reclaiming a Life of Joy and Ease
Publisher: iUniverse

Bio:
I believe life is meant to be enjoyed. I love to work with people, listen to their stories, and learn from their experiences.
My training is in Organizational and Relationship Systems Coaching through the Centre for Right Relationship. I am currently completing a Certificate in Conflict Management and Mediation from Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo, Ontario, and I have also completed a one-year healership mentoring program in Advanced Energy Healing and Awareness. I am a Celtic Reiki Master as well.
In addition to managing my practice as a life consultant and relationship coach, I volunteer as a mediator at Community Justice Initiatives.
When I'm not busy with clients, you might find me dancing flamenco… or wandering a beach somewhere in the world, with the wind in my face and the sun on my back!

Synopsis: When life's challenges get you down, and you feel like giving up on your heartfelt desires, it's not time to quit. It's time to dream even bigger! This book is filled with inspiring true stories, simple tools and exercises, and plenty of motivation. Learn how to re-chart your course and bring more joy and ease into your life as you pursue your dreams.

Blurb:
Most people have a dream. For some, it’s something they’ve wanted since childhood but have
never told a soul. For others, it may be something they tried once, and it didn’t work out so they gave up on it. Perhaps you have a dream that you keep dismissing because it seems risky or impractical. Our dreams make difficult times more bearable. They also bring joy into our lives, and inspire those around us. However, it takes more than a good imagination to make those dreams come true. It’s also about taking action and staying motivated. First, you need a clear idea of what you want. If you’re not sure, spend some time remembering your childhood and what you imagined you’d do with your life. The seeds to your dream are often found there. Once you know what your dream is, get to know it in detail. What does it feel like to be there? Who are you with, how are you dressed, what’s happening around you? Get familiar with it so that it’s easy to connect to that feeling whenever you need motivation. What’s stopping you from having that in your life right now? Make a list of any challenges or obstacles. The list is intended to give you ideas for actions, not to discourage you from moving forward, so don’t get too bogged down by it. Now take a look at the items on your list. What skills and resources do you have to meet those challenges? Who else can you call on for additional assistance? Talk to supportive friends and family members about your dream and see what ideas they have to help you move forward.
Take all of these ideas and resources and put them together into an action plan. This is a list of the steps you can take to make your dream a reality. Every day, check your list and pick one action you can take. Each time you take a step, celebrate, knowing that you’re that much closer to the life of your dreams.

Five Steps to Your Dream

1. Identify your dream
2. Make a list of your challenges
3. Develop a list of skills and resources
to meet those challenges
4. Create an action plan
5. Take one action each day toward
the life of your dreams

Wise's goal is to help 100,000 people dream bigger. To do this, and to celebrate the release of Dream BIGGER: Reclaiming a Life of Joy and Ease, she invites the public to share their life dream in an online challenge. The 60-day "Dream BIGGER Reinvention Challenge" runs from October 1 to November 29, 2010 and offers contestants the chance to post a video about their dream, get votes and become eligible for an amazing grand prize. "By sharing our dreams, we'll inspire each other to ever greater heights," she explains. Go to http://www.dreambiggercontest.com and enter today!

Dreams Aren’t Just For Kids
by Julie Wise, Life and Relationship Coach and Author of Dream Bigger: Reclaiming A Life of Joy and Ease (available online at Amazon)

Did you daydream as a child? Do you remember the magic of imagining you could fly like an eagle, discover new lands like Christopher Columbus, or find a cure for cancer? Perhaps you pictured yourself standing on stage accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, hearing the thunder of applause or savoring the majestic silence from the peak of Mount Everest.
If you stop for a moment and remember what that felt like, chances are you’d describe a sensation of freedom, joy, and ease as well as a strong sense of accomplishment and a deep connection to who you truly are.
This is what it feels like to live our dreams. And, yes, we can experience that today, even if we’re all “grown up.” As adults, our dreams often become buried under family responsibilities, demanding jobs, bills and debts. Do you hear yourself saying, “I’ll get back into that once the kids are older…when the job settles down…after I retire…”
I used to say that. Then I asked myself, “Why wait?” The yearning in my heart and soul was clamoring for attention. Waiting would only bring regret and disappointment.
I’ve since discovered that following our dreams, even in small simple ways, brings joy into our days. We become an inspiration to others, feel more energized, and are a lot more fun to be with!
To help you get started, here’s a suggestion from my new book Dream Bigger: Reclaiming a Life of Joy and Ease.
Pick one dream or goal that really calls to you, no matter how silly or impractical it might seem to you right now. Imagine that it’s possible and ask yourself:
1. What would achieving this dream mean to me?
2. What steps would be involved making this dream a reality?
3. What are some of the challenges getting in my way?
4. Who can I call on for support or resources?
Commit to taking one step today toward your dream.

To boost your motivation, check out the “Dream Bigger Reinvention Challenge” at http://www.dreambiggercontest.com and find out how people across North America are reinventing themselves and their lives. Join the movement to dream bigger and win prizes to help you make your dream a reality!

Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: Betty Collier

An editor for a magazine in which I ran an ad to promote my book, Living Inside The Testimony, asked me to come up with “A HOOK” that she could use as the headline for the ad. She said it needed to be something “catchy” that would peak the curiosity of radio and TV producers. This is what I came up with:
I Became an Author Overnight, and I Remember the Exact Night it Happened
How to Become a Best Selling Author Overnight
When You Live Inside a Testimony, You Can’t See It
Why Read a Book Written by Someone Who Never Wanted to Write One?
Is it Luck or is it all Part of THE MASTER’S Plan?
Is Your Life Part of a Master Plan?

She considered all these suggestions, but after she read the book for herself, this is the headline she created and used for the ad:
Marrying Your High School Sweetheart is Great: Until Your Kids are in High School
Don’t Miss this Woman’s Fun Advice About Life

Having said all this, my point is simply that the book takes on so many different faces. It was written to be inspirational and encouraging, but it offers much more than that. It’s hard to categorize it only in the inspirational genre because it has so many other facets that are neatly tied together to flow very smoothly. The editor said she was definitely inspired, but felt the main thing I had been missing in my promotions was to stress the humorous side of the book also. She thought it was very funny, but also full of life, love, and faith. It has enough variety to appeal to the general population, whether you share my faith or not.

I never considered myself an author, and if you had asked me prior to January, 2009 if I would ever write a book, my answer would have immediately and adamantly been "absolutely not!" Perhaps my honesty will make you wonder if the book is even worth reading, but I can assure you...I am an author. I became one overnight, and in fact, I remember the exact night it happened. It was after midnight when January 9th turned into January 10th, the night I dreamed about this book. I am confident that if you allow me to share my journey with you, you will understand perfectly, but only if you have the faith to believe. I wrote this book based on faith, well aware that not everyone would share my faith. If you read the book, you will see that my journey has been inspired by faith, hope, humor, romance, and alot of love. As one reader told me, "It's like being on a roller coaster. I didn't know what to expect next. I was laughing on one page and crying on the next...This book is a masterpiece!"

For more information about my book, please visit http://livinginsidethetestimony.com

SYNOPSIS
It's like watching a Lifetime Movie...You'll go to bed and dream about the real-life characters in the book...
It's a beautiful, heartfelt love story...
It's funny, amusing, and entertaining...
It's very emotional and inspirational...

You'll laugh on one page and cry on the next...
It's all about God's amazing love and abundant blessings...
And it's all true, straight from the heart of the author who has been on an incredible journey!

Living Inside The Testimony is a collection of anecdotes compiled by author Betty Collier. In reading these stories, you will share in her journey and experience the inspiration, faith, hope, humor, romance, and love she experienced. The stories in Living Inside The Testimony revolve around Betty’s experiences with her family, friends, and other individuals who have contributed, often unknowingly, to the path God has chosen for her. You will hear the story of how Betty fell in love at age fourteen (with her future husband), about her husband’s near-death experience with emergency brain surgery a week before high school graduation, their experiences in New York a week prior to 9/11, and the frustrating ordeal she and her husband overcame when trying to build their dream home.

Betty attributes her success and her great love to God, and she shares with readers how God has orchestrated her life’s path every step of the way. Betty’s prayer is that you will see and feel Proverbs 3:5-6 come alive and speak to your heart as you take a walk with her, inside her testimony. She hopes you enjoy the journey and discover that we all live inside testimonies meant to be shared with others.

Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: David Fingerman

Today's Guest Blog Appearance is by David Fingerman. He has shared some of his experiences with online marketing and how it has helped him as an author. Please check out his post below and be sure to visit his website for more information.

Online Marketing

Just over a year-and-a-half ago my first book, "Edging Past Reality" was released. To say I knew absolutely nothing about online marketing would be a gigantic understatement. Last month my latest novel, "Silent Kill" was released. What follows is the little bit that I've learned about online marketing since "EPR" and what has worked for me, and what hasn't. I still feel like a dinosaur at the computer, totally out of touch with all the new technology that seems to be bombarding society on a near daily basis. I'm definitely at the low end of the learning curve, but at least I am still learning.

Start a blog. I know, on the common sense level this would rate around a "duh." Keep your blog interesting and make it look professional. I've seen some blogs that read like "Dear Diary . . ." and they are so boring they make my life look interesting (trust me, unless you suffer from insomnia you don't want to go there). Keep the subject matter fresh and update often. One of the best things I've found one can do is what Writers Movement is doing ~ opening up to guest bloggers (soft jazz doesn't hurt, either). This is one of those cases where it's a do as I say not as I do. My blog is part of my website (http://davidfingerman.com) and as you can see if you check it out, it doesn't look all that professional (something I will remedy soon) and I don't update it nearly enough. That might very well explain why some people are having so much success with their blog and I'm not.

If you want to advertise something and don't have a MySpace and a Facebook page yet ~ get one (I know, another 'duh'). I'm guessing that just about everyone reading this already has one or the other if not both, but are you utilizing it them best way you can? Yeah, it's all fine and dandy to play mafia wars and to keep tabs on friends and let them know what you're up to, but these are two of the best marketing sites on the web (in my opinion - there are bunches of others which are also quite worthwhile, but these two seem to be the most popular). It's taken a little discipline, but I have weaned myself off the zoos, the farms, the mafia wars, etc. Instead of playing games, I've met a number of other writers that I am now friends with. We've developed quite an information-sharing network. I've even sold a couple of short stories because of recommendations of writers I didn't know a couple of weeks ago but can now call friends. One thing that didn't work for me was buying ad space on Facebook. The hits on my website went up, but I noticed no new book sales because of it.

Along these lines is open a twitter account. Be a follower and make comments. Soon people will be following you. Tweet a lot, but not only about your book or that will turn people off just as quickly as you telling them what you had for breakfast or other inane things. Make it personal, but keep it interesting. And don't be afraid to retweet. If someone you follow has an interesting article, share it again with your followers.

Are you all way ahead of me? One last thing that I was surprised a number of people didn't already know about were virtual book tours. This is where an author (like me) is a guest blogger or interviewee. As stated above, Writers Movement has opened itself up to this venue. I think it's a win/win situation. The blog site gets fresh new writing and the author taps into a new audience and maybe some new followers (hint, hint).

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani RT @WritersMovement: so the bottom line is the choice between traditional publishing and #selfpublishing depends on YOUR personal goals #writersmovement -7:00 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement Be original and put be willing to put in the work to make urself stand out. Connect w/ur fans. #writersmovement -6:58 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement so the bottom line is the choice between traditional publishing and #selfpublishing depends on YOUR personal goals #writersmovement -6:57 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement Keep in mind that consumers don't care who #published your #book! They care about the content and its curb appeal. #writersmovement -6:56 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement RT @AuthoressKimani: I would say traditional publishing would make it "easier" but thats because of the politics behind it #writersmovement -6:55 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement RT @maddwriter: But, if a book is good, its going to get noticed regardless. <---- cosign #writersmovement -6:54 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @maddwriter with so many self-pubbed authors now, what can you do to make your work stand out from the others? #writersmovement -6:54 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani RT @maddwriter: With social media it's a lot easier for an author to spread the word about their work now. #writersmovement> #Truth -6:54 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @WritersMovement I would say traditional publishing would make it "easier" but that's because of the politics behind it #writersmovement -6:53 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter But, if a book is good, it's going to get noticed regardless. #writersmovement -6:53 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter With social media it's a lot easier for an author to spread the word about their work now. #writersmovement -6:52 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement I would say the self pub route because the author is more in control of their success, but that's just me. #writersmovement -6:51 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement *self pub route #writersmovement -6:50 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement every writer dreams of becoming a best seller..does that dream seem more feasible with the trade or pub route? #writersmovement -6:50 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @AuthoressKimani Oh I definitely agree with you. To me it seems like writing is now a fad & no longer an art <--- cosign. #writersmovement -6:49 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @authordlsparks Oh yes. I agree. They both have their ups and downs respectfully #WritersMovement -6:47 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement RT @authordlsparks: @AuthoressKimani I think theyre both equally hard, just in different ways. <---- very much so #writersmovement -6:47 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @WritersMovement Oh I definitely agree with you. To me it seems like writing is now a fad & no longer an art #writersmovement -6:46 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement Most definitely I would but NOT if it involed changing anything about #HUB or how I put them out. #writersmovement -6:45 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @AuthoressKimani I think they're both equally hard, just in different ways. #writersmovement -6:45 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @AuthoressKimani i agree.... but not everyone that is trade published are good writers also. am i wrong? #writersmovement -6:44 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @WritersMovement And some feel that it's the "lazy" way out instead of putting your all into being chosen by a pub house #writersmovement -6:42 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @maddwriter if a trade publisher wants to sign you after reviewing hub 1 & 2, would you go that route? #writersmovement -6:41 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @WritersMovement ...whether they have the talent to write or not #writersmovement -6:41 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement I think they think that because, technically, anyone can self-publish. #writersmovement -6:41 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @WritersMovement I think it's because self-publishing opened up the gate for EVERYBODY to release a book... #writersmovement -6:41 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks got cha! #writersmovement -6:39 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement I've read several times that self-publishing has less status with some people...why do you think that is? #writersmovement -6:39 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @WritersMovement I always knew i wanted an agent, so I guess it wasn't really "choice" as it was a "step" for me #writersmovement -6:39 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @AuthoressKimani I'm not sure. They prob would have wanted the more trad book instead of small broken down volumes. #writersmovement -6:36 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @maddwriter What about #HUB do you think a traditional publishing house would have changed if you went with one? #writersmovement -6:35 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks what made you choose the trade route over self-publishing? #writersmovement -6:35 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @AuthoressKimani Pretty much free reign. I always keep in my the image of myself and my house when lookn for ways to market #writersmovement -6:34 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @authordlsparks Are there guidelines/restrictions on what kind of marketing you can do or do you have free reign? #writersmovement -6:33 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @AuthoressKimani Hey! good to see u here. #writersmovement -6:31 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @AuthoressKimani hello ;-) #writersmovement -6:30 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @maddwriter Thanks & hello everyone. #writersmovement -6:30 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks I am responsible for probably 80% of my own marketing. #writersmovement -6:29 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks I don't like being immersed in the "business" end of it....takes the passion out of it for me. Makes it more of a labor #writersmovement -6:28 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @AuthoressKimani Being traditionally published, how much of your own marketing do you do? <--- good question. #writersmovement -6:27 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @authordlsparks When you say that traditional fits ur writing personality what exactly do you mean by that? #writersmovement -6:26 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block AuthoressKimani @authordlsparks Being traditionally published, how much of your own marketing do you do? #writersmovement -6:26 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @WritersMovement yeah, my agent is VERY good about speaking up and supporting my concerns. #writersmovement -6:25 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks so were you able to still maintain a high % of "say so" with your work? #writersmovement -6:24 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @maddwriter I'm actually pleased with my agent and my house up to this point. Traditional fits my writing "personality" #writersmovement -6:23 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks I have been blessed with good and helpful editors. Their red marks come with "direction" @WritersMovement @maddwriter #writersmovement -6:23 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks self publishing in the near future? #writersmovement -6:22 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks thats good to know....so what has your experience been like so far a trade pubbed? would you ever consider #writersmovement -6:22 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @authordlsparks Do you have any regrets going the traditional route or are you happy with it? #writersmovement -6:22 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks @maddwriter....so wrong lol #writersmovement -6:21 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @WritersMovement @maddwriter I am traditional published, I guess it depends on the editor. #HUB #writersmovement -6:21 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @maddwriter .....at a publishing house rips that manuscript into unrecognizable shreds #writersmovement -6:20 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @authordlsparks Didn't miss anything due to someone being late *cough*TIFFANIE*cough* LOL #writersmovement -6:20 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @maddwriter true because Often an author's joy at selling a manuscript turns into despair when an over-zealous editor.... #writersmovement -6:20 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter I don't think I would have the same freedom with #HUB that I would have if I was with a traditional publisher. #writersmovement -6:18 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks @maddwriter @WritersMovement What'd I miss? #writersmovement -6:18 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @authordlsparks Hey! Glad you could make it. *waves back* #writersmovement -6:16 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @authordlsparks hey lady.....thanks for coming #writersmovement -6:16 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement I would say having control of ur manuscript and quick turnaround are the most important to me. #writersmovement -6:16 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block authordlsparks *waving* hey all @WritersMovement #writersmovement -6:15 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement @maddwriter its cool....everyone is probably hanging with fam stuffing their faces anyone...I sure was ;-) #writersmovement -6:15 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement OR are control of your manuscript and quick turnaround most important #writersmovement -6:14 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement Is it better to play the waiting game in order to earn a large advance from a traditional publisher? #writersmovement -6:14 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement sucks that it's just us two. #writersmovement -6:13 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement seems like it'll just be us 2 tonight....since its a holiday weekend we can keep it short. so.... #writersmovement -6:12 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block maddwriter @WritersMovement I seen that I had an email from you. Glad you like it. Tried to up the ante on volume 2. #writersmovement -6:09 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Feature | Block WritersMovement okay, so todays topic is about traditional vs self-publishing... the pros and cons for each... #writersmovement -6:08 PM Sep 4th, 2010

Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: George Sherman Hudson

Bio:

George Sherman Hudson was born and raised in Atlanta Ga.. After being continuously rejected by different publishers because of the subject matter contained in his books while serving time, this father of two did some research and started G Street Chronicles, the urban book publishing company that's ran by him with the help of his COO and fiancé Erica Jones . While George is continuously working hard to make G Street Chronicles a recognized name in the literary industry, he's also working hard on his highly anticipated REAL series. George has authored five books in all. His debut book Drama is in stores now. Having published more than 10 titles in the first year of business George is determined to make G Street Chronicles an urban lit powerhouse.

Synopsis of Book:

The drama just doesn't stop in the lives of Deb, Tammy, and Lisa. Deb, the hard worker and savvy entrepreneur is blessed with a multimillion dollar contract, but has to enjoy the success without the comfort of her man whose fledging music career has him busy from state to state. Tammy has everything a diva could want, a multimillion dollar home, expensive cars, clothes, jewelry, and she thought love.

Drama is a book a lot like sex in the city with black characters, each chapter is told from the point of view of a different character. They take turns telling their side of the story. It has everything, humor, emotions, great characters, and a lot of drama.

Writers Movement Guest Blog Appearance: Jacqui Murray

Jacqui Murray is currently on a Virtual Book Tour. Today she will share with us some information on building characteristics for our characters and her book. So lets welcome Jacqui Murray!

Jacqui Murray's Bio

Meet techno non-fiction writer, Jacqui Murray, born in Berkley California to Irish-German parents. After receiving a BA in Economics, another in Russian and an MBA, she spent twenty years in a variety of industries while raising two children and teaching evening classes at community colleges. Now, she lives with her husband, adult son and two beautiful Labradors. She writes how-books, five blogs on everything from the Naval Academy to tech to science, as well as a column for the Examiner on tech tips.

Guest Blog Post

If your story sounds stilted or scripted, the believability of your characters might be the problem. Readers get to know them through your words, how they participates in the plot, and their introspective comments. Readers don’t like when the protagonist or antagonist or any of the individuals they’ve spent hours getting to know and love act, well, out of character.

Get to know your character–intimately–before you cast them. Know their favorite colors, movies, songs. Know their morals, educational background, weaknesses and strengths. Know them as though they were your child, or your best friend.

I’d suggest writing a profile. Not just a few paragraphs, but pages. Once you’ve completed that (see below), throw the character into situations and see if you can predict how they would act. If you know them well enough, you’ll find you can keep all of their thoughts, reactions, and movements, in character.

In my case I write a prequel to my story so I can flesh out the characters, their actions, thoughts, feelings. It’s not for publication (well, maybe as a prequel after people have met the characters in a later time frame. I’m still pondering that.) but it makes me comfortable that even the surprises in my novel are in character.

I’m a little crazy about getting them right. You might be able to do it in a shorter amount of effort.

You can get lists of background questions from the books in this blog’s sidebar. Here are traits I use to flesh out my characters:

· What is their ruling passion–what makes them tick?

· How old are they?

· Describe them physically including abnormalities, allergies, scars, deformities, posture, bearing.

· Describe them psychologically, including their fears, manias, inhibitions, patterns of behavior, special abilities, soundness of reasoning, habits. Are they irritable? Are they sensible? What are longings, aptitudes, special talents?

· What are their emotional firestorms, like ambition, love, hate, greed, vengefulness, lust, envy, malice?

· What is their purpose in the story?

· What is their position in the story–antagonist, protagonist, confidante?

· What are their speech patterns?

· How does their voice sound? Breathy? Gravelly? Mellow?

· Do they have nervous ticks, gestures, mannerisms (everyone does–what are theirs?) Do they tug on an ear?

· Take the time to go through their typical day–work, jog, visit the health club, drink coffee at Starbucks. Then when they do something out of this routine, you can explain it.

· What are their strengths and weaknesses?

· What is their work life like?

Enough? You’ll know when you write the character into a scene. Is there any time that you aren’t sure how your character should behave? If there is, add more detail to your list.

Do you have any other questions you ask of your character? I’d like to learn from your experience.

Vampires, long believed to be nothing but myth and legend, do in fact exist. For years they have lived peacefully amongst humans but all that is about to change. Not content with being considered an equal to the human race, a faction has arisen that is threatening to fracture the delicate truce and engage in a global war pitting humans against vampires.

H.U.B. (Humanity's Ultimate Battle) Volume 2: Blowback is the next step in the epic HUB series! Picking up right where Volume 1 left off, it offers you more of what you've come to expect from HUB but raises the ante to a whole new level!

~D.I.V.A.~ DOMESTICALLY INVOLVED IN VIOLENT AFFAIRS, the fact based debut novel from Tiffanie Minnis, tells an engaging story about how a young woman's past of family violence affects her present by turning her into a domestic abuser in her adult life. Told through the eyes of Michaela Davis, ~D.I.V.A.~ takes you on an emotionally riveting ride of her encounters with abuse that she endured as a helpless child, progressing as she grows into a vengeful woman who dishes out the same abuse on the men she becomes intimately involved with. But in the midst of her revolution, does she eventually pay for all of her malice revenges?
